The Firm: The Founding Partner

Michael Kyprianou is the senior partner of Michael Kyprianou & Co, specialising in litigation and often briefed on international litigation. He is regarded as one of the leading litigators in Cyprus.

Until 1991, Michael held the post of Senior Counsel of the Republic. During his Government service, he advised various ministries and departments on important legal issues, particularly the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Communications and Works. He also appeared in court, mainly before the Supreme Court, in litigation representing the Government of Cyprus and its various ministries and departments.

He concluded his career as Senior Counsel of the Republic with the landmark case of the Republic of Cyprus and the Autocephalous Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus v Goldberg and Feldman Fine Arts Inc and Peg Goldberg, before the Indiana Court, and later before the US Court of Appeal. The defendants were ordered to return to the Cyprus Government and the Church of Cyprus the Kanakaria Mosaics, stolen from the Kanakaria Church in Cyprus and sold to Goldberg. These mosaics consisted of a handful of the rarest holy Byzantine artifacts to survive into the twentieth century.

Michael also appeared in a number of cases before the European Court of Human Rights at all levels.

Michael is also involved in the cultural and athletic life of Cyprus. He was elected as president of the Cyprus Football Association for four consecutive terms and was a member of the committee of UEFA and of the Appellate Disciplinary Board of UEFA. He served as vice-president of Entente de Florence for ten years.

He was elected as a member of Parliament in the 1991-1996 and chaired the House Committee of Commerce, Industry and Tourism for 5 years.

He represented Cyprus in various legal, commercial, political, cultural and athletic talks and negotiations on an international level. He also attended international, European and Commonwealth conferences and seminars on commerce, money-laundering, trusts and shipping.
